How Not to Be Manipulated in This Age of Disinformation

Writer's picture: Rev. James TrappRev. James Trapp

We are living in an era where information is power, but truth is under attack. The rapid spread of disinformation isn’t just a technological issue—it’s a spiritual crisis. We are at a critical juncture where the inability to think critically could lead us to catastrophic consequences.

To quote Congressman Jonathan Jackson, “The same Santa Ana winds blowing the fires are the same winds blowing the lies and disinformation around the country.” And the truth is, many of us are standing right in the middle of the storm, passively accepting the narratives fed to us instead of seeking clarity and truth.

The Battle for Your Mind

There’s a reason billionaires are buying up social media platforms and news outlets. Today, information is the most valuable currency. Whoever controls the flow of information controls the narrative. And if they can shape the narrative, they can control what we believe, how we think, and ultimately, how we act.

As the French philosopher Voltaire warned, “Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.” We witnessed this unfold in real-time. As wildfires raged across California and blizzards hit Atlanta, instead of focusing on the environmental crises unfolding before our eyes, some would rather point fingers at a Black mayor or a lesbian fire chief. This isn’t just ignorance—it’s a deliberate manipulation of public perception, designed to distract us from the real issues that demand our attention.

Busting Myths, Breaking Free

Let’s break down some of the absurd claims surrounding recent wildfires in California:

  1. No, the hydrants weren’t empty. Even if they were, no city can simultaneously fight ten massive fires at once.

  2. No, fire trucks weren’t stopped in San Francisco or Sacramento to pass an emissions test because of the Green New Deal. That legislation doesn’t even exist.

  3. No, the government does not have weather-manipulating machines to seed clouds and control rainfall. If you believe that, you might be one of the most gullible people on the planet.

  4. No, you cannot just take seawater from the ocean and dump it onto the fires. Seawater is full of salt, and using it would corrode every hydrant, every pipe, every electrical system, and render the land infertile.

The question is, why do so many people believe these myths? Because they aren’t thinking critically. They are being fed emotionally charged, politically motivated falsehoods and accepting them as truth.

The Real Cost of Disinformation

Critical thinking isn’t just an intellectual exercise—it’s a moral imperative. When people allow themselves to be manipulated by disinformation, real lives are at stake. While some debate absurd conspiracy theories, thousands lost their homes, their livelihoods, and their loved ones to disasters exacerbated by climate change.

Imagine how many unhoused individuals are unaccounted for right now because they weren’t considered in the official death tolls. Imagine how many bodies will need to be identified through dental records because they were burned beyond recognition. These are the realities we should be focusing on—not baseless political distractions.

It’s Time to Take Back Control

We must stop ceding control of the information landscape to those who seek to manipulate us. We, as spiritually conscious individuals, must step up and reclaim the truth.

Here’s how:

  1. Question Everything: Before believing or sharing information, ask, “Is it true? Can I absolutely know that it is true?”

  2. Refuse to Engage in Echo Chambers: Challenge your own biases by seeking diverse sources of information.

  3. Hold Those in Power Accountable: Disinformation isn’t harmless—it has consequences. Call out those who spread false narratives for personal or political gain.

  4. Empathize, Don’t Demonize: When we demonize others, we fall into the same trap of reactionary, uncritical thinking. Seek to understand, educate, and elevate.

This is no longer just about politics. It’s about survival. If we continue to let disinformation dictate our thoughts and decisions, the cost will be far greater than we can imagine.

The time for passive consumption of information is over. The time to put critical thinking into action is now.

Peace and Blessings,

James
